The 2008 Ford Focus brings a bold new look, a refined and flexible interior and a higher level of driving enjoyment to an evolving small car market. With features including Ford Sync™, standard side-curtain air bags and fuel economy in the mid-30s, the redesigned Focus will play an important role in Ford Motor Company’s resurging car portfolio, continuing the momentum built by the successful Ford Fusion mid-size sedan.

Muscular stance, sharp character lines define Focus

For the new 2008 Focus, Ford’s design team drew inspiration from the highly successful Fusion, borrowing that car’s prominent chrome-bar grille design, flared wheel arches and sweeping, crisp lines to create a small car that stands out with a sporty stance.

Even details in the distinctive headlights help enhance the 2008 Focus’ design story. Horizontal bars with a matte surface run through the reflection area, visually connecting the headlights with a sweeping line running through the chrome-bar grille.

The taillamps borrow cues from the 2008 Ford Escape, with a white arc cutting across the red lens. Complementing the taillamps, the center high-mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) is carefully integrated into the decklid and features a new clear lens that illuminates with red LEDs for a progressive, modern appearance.

Focus SE and SES models feature a front fender appliqué integrated just behind the front wheel well, adding a bright accent to the profile. On all models, the “Focus” name is brightly spelled out in bold italic letters on the decklid, scuff plates and instrument panel.

The 2008 Focus is available in two body styles – two-door coupe (a first for Focus) and four-door sedan – in S, SE and SES trims. Focus is built in Wayne, Mich.

Redesigned cabin is quiet, inviting and refined

While the exterior design helps the Focus stand out, the real news for the 2008 Focus is the interior design. The all-new interior design, with unique materials and new levels of craftsmanship, delivers a sense of modern, contemporary openness and provides even more flexible storage space.

Interior features include:

* A new “top of dash” display positioned at eye level at the top of the center stack. This simple, efficient design puts much of the vehicle’s information in one place, making it easier and quicker to read when driving.
* A new “poke-through” center console design replaces the traditional “brick” design for the radio and HVAC controls. The all-new center stack houses the controls for the audio and HVAC as well as a standard auxiliary input jack and two power points. In vehicles equipped with the available Sync option, the associated USB port is located on the center stack near the power points.
* New Ice Blue Lighting on the instrument cluster, center console, steering wheel and door lock and window switches presents a cool, crisp light that enhances the overall feel of the interior and is easy on the eyes when driving at night.
* On SES models, the dashboard and center console sport a brilliant matte-silver-metallic finish. On SE models, the center console and dashboard center finish panels also feature contrasting colors.

The 2008 Focus offers a larger center console as well as added space in front of the shifter for extra storage. Newly designed door trim features larger bins and cupholders in the doors. The console also provides three additional cupholders. New seats have improved contours and offer more lateral and lumbar support. A new cloth pattern is featured for 2008, while the leather seats include contrast stitching for an added touch of craftsmanship.

Focus S models feature a Stone interior; SE and SES models are available in Stone or Charcoal. Vehicles equipped with the SE Deluxe package feature a white-face instrument cluster and chrome accents on the door handles and side-view mirror caps and unique 16-inch wheels. The SES model also features the white-faced instrument cluster, and adds body colored door handles and mirror caps, rear spoiler and unique 16-inch wheels.

Focus lets you set the mood

Adding to the appeal of the interior, the 2008 Focus comes with an available next-generation color-configurable interior ambient lighting system. Taking the customizable dashboard lighting system first introduced on the 2005 Mustang to the next level, the ambient lighting system on the 2008 Focus can change the light inside the cupholders and in the front and rear footwells. The driver or front-seat passenger can choose from seven different colors, including red, orange, blue, indigo, violet, green and yellow, simply by cycling through a dash-mounted switch.

Customizable and unique interior lighting inside cars and trucks is an emerging trend. According to a recent survey, more than 90 percent of consumers said they would be interested in unique lighting to enhance the appearance of their vehicle’s interior.

Sync connects your digital life to your drive life

The 2008 Ford Focus is one of the first Ford Motor Company vehicles to feature Sync, a cutting-edge way to use cell phones and media players inside a vehicle. This industry-first technology offers unprecedented levels of connection, control, simplicity and personalization for electronic devices inside a car.

A microphone inside the cabin allows consumers to use their mobile phones hands free while operating a vehicle. Using Bluetooth technology as a foundation, Sync can wirelessly connect up to six different mobile phones to the vehicle through a process called pairing. Once the phone is paired, the user’s personal features (such as address book and ring tones) are readily accessed by the system.

Sync is also the only automotive application that offers full hands-free, voice-activated command and control over portable media players and USB storage devices. Sync’s advanced capability allows consumers to access the songs, artists, genres, albums, playlists and more through voice commands. The selections also are shown on the vehicle’s audio display, since Sync allows complete command and control via dashboard or steering wheel controls. Ultimately, Sync acts as an extension of the media player, effectively melding the player’s functionality into the vehicle.

Sync hosts nearly all media players, including all Apple iPods, all MP3 players with “Plays for Sure” technology, and Microsoft’s new music player, Zune. Sync also accepts music saved on USB storage drives. Located on the dashboard near the power outlets, the Sync USB port simultaneously charges the player as the music is being played over the vehicle’s audio system. All music played through Sync is high-resolution digital quality.

Revised suspension settings further refine the Focus driving experience
Since its North American introduction in 1999, Focus has been hailed for being an affordable car that handles and drives like a car twice its price. For 2008, the suspension has been redesigned and retuned to further improve overall driving dynamics.

The Focus gets its great driving dynamics from a suspension setup that features MacPherson struts up front and an independent multilink design in the rear. The spring rates, dampers, stabilizer bars, and bushings are all new for 2008. Generally speaking, the spring rates were dropped and improvements to steering and handling were accomplished by careful tuning and increasing the size of the front stabilizer bar.

Engineers also derived unique tuning packages for vehicles equipped with 15- or 16-inch wheels and tires. Models with 15-inch wheels and low-rolling resistance Hankook tires use a front stabilizer bar only. Models with 16-inch wheels and sporty, responsive Pirelli tires use front and rear stabilizer bars.

The revised chassis settings help improve steering feel and responsiveness over the previous Focus. Changes in body structure also help improve handling. The cross-car beam located beneath the instrument panel has been significantly stiffened for 2008. The steering column is mounted to this beam, which means minimal vibration in the steering wheel as Focus is driven over rough and uneven roads.

Focus gets an all-new brake system for 2008. New aluminum calipers save weight and improve brake pedal feel. The brakes are 10.9-inch vented discs in front and 11.0-inch drums in back with an available anti-lock braking system (ABS).

The 2008 Focus comes with a choice of two engines. The standard engine is a 140-horsepower (up four horsepower from the previous model) 2.0-liter, Duratec 20 dual-overhead-cam (DOHC), inline 4-cylinder. The added power comes from an all-new air intake system and a new cooling system, both of which are designed to improve efficiency and reduce back-pressure in the exhaust.

There’s also a super-clean, 130-horsepower Duratec 20E engine that qualifies Focus as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV). The 20E is cleaner than some hybrid gas-electric vehicles. The PZEV engine is required from dealers in California, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine. For orders from dealers in cross border states – Arizona, Connecticut, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island – PZEV Focus models are available as a limited option.

The Duratec 20 and 20E are available with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. For 2008, the transmissions have revised final drive ratios, which let the engine turn at a lower rpm rate during highway driving and get better fuel economy. In addition to powertrain refinements, fuel economy gains were also achieved by weight reduction and aerodynamic improvements. Compared to a comparably equipped 2007 model, the new 2008 Focus is about 100 pounds lighter.

Focus provides a quite, refined ride and low NVH

The new exterior design doesn’t just look good, it provides function as well. Many hours were spent in the wind tunnel developing the shapes of exterior parts such as mirrors and front openings, spoilers, and the shape of the air deflectors under the car. The improved airflow helps reduce the coefficient of drag from 0.33 to 0.32 and delivers a quieter cabin and improved fuel economy.

At a simulated 80 mph in the wind tunnel, the previous Focus had 28.8 sones of wind noise while the new model recorded 25.6, an 8 percent reduction in wind noise. In a road test measuring “boom, rumble and roar,” decibel levels dropped from 70 dBA to 67.3.

The difference between the previous model and the 2008 Focus is far more dramatic than the numbers show. Sones reflect overall noise levels and not the directionality of the noise. A noise coming from a particular area can be perceived as being louder, even though the overall noise level is similar. With Focus, engineers addressed not only the overall noise level, but also where the noise is coming from.

* Engineers reduced wind noise by installing a new acoustic windshield and thicker side glass in the front doors (increased in thickness from 3.2 to 3.8 millimeters).
* Closed-cell foam is used for the dash panel seal, as opposed to open-cell foam material, to help reduce wind noise even further.
* Fluffy cotton-like sound-deadening material is incorporated into the door trim panels, C-pillars and the shelf behind the rear seats to reduce cabin noise.
* The sealing around the side mirrors is redesigned and reduces noise entering the passenger cabin.
* The front air dam is stiffened and produces less noise.

The climate control system is more efficient, with improved cooling and heating performance. Switching to electronic actuators for the floor, panel, defrost and temperature controls improves heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) performance. The completely redesigned climate control system is also quieter and lighter than the system it replaced.

New and improved standard safety features

The 2008 Focus comes standard with Ford’s Personal Safety System®, including thorax side air bags and side air curtains for increased coverage in the event of a side impact crash.

Focus uses Ford’s Safety Canopy™ side air curtains that deploy in certain side-impact collisions to help protect front- and second-row outboard occupants. The curtains remain inflated for several seconds after deployment to enhance protection during an extended crash event.

The air curtains feature “roll-fold” technology. If occupants are improperly seated and resting their heads against a window, the Safety Canopy™ is designed to slide between the glass and occupants as it inflates.

The 2008 Focus is built to last

The 2008 redesign for the Focus is more than skin deep. Engineers and designers improved every part of the body to improve how the vehicle behaves under all driving conditions.

Engineers reworked and improved the strength of the roof structure, the package tray, the connections between the rear floor and the underbody and the door systems. A stiffened cross-car beam beneath the instrument panel connects the car side to side and provides better lateral stiffness.

Even the wiring in the new Focus has been rethought and redesigned. A new Smart Power Distribution Junction Box distributes electrical power throughout the vehicle. In the past, the car had separate connections and unnecessary wires. This modern system is lighter, more efficient and less complex, reducing the amount of wires. It also simplifies manufacturing.

IIHS Names Three Volvo Models "Top Safety Picks"

For the past two years, Volvo's XC90 SUV, C70 Convertible, and S80 Sedan have all earned IIHS's top honors for vehicle safety in front, side, and rear impact crash protection. Each model presented unique challenges towards achieving top ratings.

2007 Volvo C70

"Volvo safety has been over 80 years in the making. Our cars are born from a culture that believes in protecting those in and around everything we make," states Anne Belec, President and CEO, Volvo Cars of North America. "Safety is a matter of cultural pride. Safety is not added on; it comes with the first kernel of thought when designing a new Volvo." Belec continues, "With today's engineering infrastructure, many can build cars to pass tests as witnessed by 34 vehicles being acknowledged as Top Safety Picks while last year there were only 11. What separates Volvo from others is factoring in real world accident research to build, what we believe is the safest SUV, Convertible, and Sedan, real world cars that go beyond standardized tests."

Volvo's For Real World Safety

Volvo's holistic, 'Circle of Development' approach to safety starts from real world accident research, moving through to engineering, testing, manufacturing and coming back to real world accident research. Volvo safety is about Protective and Preventive safety - to help people during one of their worst life experiences: an automobile accident.

While each vehicle achieved top safety acknowledgements for IIHS's standard bevy of crash testing, Volvo went even further to help offer protection that might be needed in real world situations. Acing crash test criteria is but one way to protect occupants. At Volvo, there is the belief that standard tests help to predict vehicle behavior but real world accident research adds another layer of safety engineering to those in and around Volvo cars.

XC90

When launched in 2002, the XC90 was fitted with the world's first Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) that helped driver maintain vehicle control during rapid lane changes associated with accident avoidance maneuvers. However, not all accidents are created equally. Volvo has used different grades of steel including Ultra High Strength Steel in order to enhance the structural integrity of the vehicle.

C70

The all new C70 carries safety engineering from the preceding C70 by increasing use of Ultra High Strength Steel for side and rear energy absorption protection. Also featured is the world's first side impact air bag from convertibles. Also standard are pop-up roll bars.

S80
Protective Exterior Safety

Protective safety in the new Volvo S80 is structured in the form of a network of exterior and interior safety systems that interact to reduce the risk of occupant injury in the event of a collision. The exterior systems have the task of distributing and absorbing incoming collision forces so that the passenger space is preserved as intact as possible. The body is therefore built in the form of a box-section structure using varying grades of steel, with all the components interacting to provide controlled deformation that reduces impacting energy to the human body.

Transverse Mounted Engines

Like the rest of Volvo's offerings, the S80 features a transversely installed engine and front-wheel drive. Transverse engine installation provides a controlled deformation zone in the engine compartment and helps reduce the risk of engine intrusion into the passenger compartment in a frontal collision. Even the new V8 is transversely installed thanks to its extremely compact dimensions and effective packaging.

Interior Safety

Interior safety systems assist in keeping the passengers securely in place to help maximize seat belt/airbag effectiveness and minimize the risk of serious injuries. In order to provide the most effective protection possible Volvo Cars has developed a number of unique systems.

* A new type of side-impact airbag makes Volvo's patented SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) even more effective. The new side impact airbags feature two separate inflation chambers - one at hip height and one at chest height. Since the hips can withstand greater impact than the chest, the lower chamber is inflated at five time's higher pressure than the upper section. The side impact airbags interact with the inflatable curtains (IC) and the body's network of beams to reduce acceleration loads on the human body.

* Volvo's WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) - is one of the most effective on the market. In the event of a severe impact from the rear, the front seat backrest and head restraint move together with the occupant's body, thus damping its movement in much the same way the arms move rearward when catching a ball. In the latest generation of WHIPS, the system's function has been further developed to provide an even smoother "catching" motion.

* A three-piece steering column designed to pivot up and collapse away from the driver through the use of a pyrotechnically charged separation bolt. This helps to better position the air bag deployment process for pending contact with the driver.

All five seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel safety belts, belt pre-tensioners and head restraints. The highest possible safety requires that all occupants always use their safety belts (which Volvo made standard equipment in 1959 - a world's first).

Preventive safety - the avoidance of accidents - was one of the most important starting points when the new S80 was being developed. Preventative safety has lead to an entirely new generation of advanced driving and support systems and, of course, included Volvo's legendary Protective safety.

Accident avoidance is the next step in Preventive protection. Combining multiplexed electronics with advanced software and hardware designs have created a new level of driver assisted technologies. Preventive safety systems transform surrounding environmental activities into usable data to help the S80 driver avoid dangerous situations.

Collision Avoidance Package - New for 2008 S80, V70 and XC70 ($1695 MSRP) *

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses a radar sensor to help the driver maintain the distance to the vehicle in front. ACC should primarily be seen as a comfort-enhancing function, but it contributes at the same time to more controlled driving when the traffic rhythm is uneven.

Collision Warning with Auto Brake Function (CW) helps reduce the risk of frontal impact. If the Volvo approaches another vehicle from behind and the driver does not react, the system alerts the driver with audible and visual signals. If the risk of a collision nonetheless continues to increase despite the warning, the brake support system is activated. Thereafter, if the system senses that a collision is likely to occur, then the brakes are applied up to 50%.

Distance Alert helps keep the time gap to the vehicle in front, also functions when the ACC is disengaged. If the gap becomes shorter than selected, a heads-up display is illuminated to warn driver.

Driver Alert this unique system uses a camera to monitor the cars movements between the lane markings. The system calculates whether you risk losing control of the vehicle. An audible and test message warning are used if the risk is assessed as "high".

Lane Departure Warning is activated if the car should cross one of the road markings without an obvious reason. This system helps to prevent road departure accidents and head-on collisions due to temporary distractions.

Blind Spot Identification System (BLIS) registers if another vehicle is in the offset rear blind spot along either side of the car and the driver is alerted via a visual signal.

Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) helps stop the driver being distracted by non-essential information in pressing situations, for instance by delaying incoming phone calls or SMS.

Active Bi-Xenon Light - moving headlight beams that follow the curvature of the road - help maintain the best possible visibility in the dark on twisting roads.

Smart, Portable Garmin Navigation System Fits All New Volvo Cars

In cooperation with Garmin, Volvo Cars has developed an elegant navigation kit that can be fitted to all new Volvo cars. The dealer installed accessory kit includes both a mounting bracket and the navigator unit. It will be available by the end of 2007.

Volvo Cars has designed a smart mounting bracket for Garmin's latest hand navigator, the nüvi 760. The bracket is fitted on top of the dashboard, offering the driver a convenient plug-and-play solution.

Garmin portable navigation system

This setup replaces the provisional suction cups and messy wires that often come with portable navigators. Volvo's bracket has an integrated power connection for the 178-gram Garmin unit - and the bracket can easily be folded out of the way when the driver takes the navigator out of the car.

The system has a number of other benefits:

* Its location on the dashboard has been chosen with care to make sure that the unit does not distract the driver and reduce his concentration on the road. A crash test evaluation by Volvo Cars' safety experts also determined that placing the unit on top of the dashboard helps to prevent injuries in the event of a collision.
* The navigator has a fully integrated antenna and a bright colour screen in widescreen format.
* The unit can easily be moved between different cars.
* The Garmin nüvi 760 comes pre-programmed with detailed two- and three-dimensional maps covering Europe (alternatively the USA and Canada).
* It also includes an integrated database with Volvo information, including the quickest route to the closest Volvo workshop.

The navigation package fits all new Volvo car models. It can also be fitted to a number of earlier car models. They include the Volvo S80 from model year 1999, the S60 and V70 from 2000, the XC70 from 2001 and recent model years of the Volvo S40, V50, C70 and XC90.

Later, it will also be possible to get the TMC (Traffic Message Channel) function.

The package will initially be available in Europe and North America. The recommended price for a complete installation, including the Garmin unit, is 699 Euros in Europe and 879 US Dollars in North America.

Subaru Impreza Earns IIHS "Top Safety Pick" Award

2008 Subaru Impreza receives highest possible safety rating from IIHS for frontal, side and rear-impact crash tests

CHERRY HILL, N.J., November 16, 2007 – Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that the 2008 Subaru Impreza is the only small car to earn the highest rating in the most recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests that now require side head protection and electronic stability control.

The 2008 Subaru Impreza received “GOOD” ratings in the frontal, side and rear-impact crash tests for both the driver and passenger seating positions. Based on this performance and standard side curtains for side impact head protection, the 2008 Impreza 2.5i with VDC was the first small car to receive the coveted IIHS “Top Safety Pick” award.

“Customers’ safety is our top priority,” said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president, Subaru of America, Inc. “Subaru makes industry leading safety affordable with the IIHS award-winning 2008 Subaru Impreza starting at just $16,995. It speaks to the tireless efforts of our engineers to build vehicles with uncompromising active and passive safety features – starting with all-wheel drive, standard.”

In its report, the IIHS highlighted the reinforced pillar behind the rear passenger door and standard side airbags of the 2008 Subaru Impreza. It also said the Impreza 2.5i active head restraints “do a better job” than those in other small cars.

The IIHS provides consumers with vehicle safety information in a simple rating system – poor, marginal, acceptable and good, with good being the highest. The IIHS crash tests are conducted at speeds higher than required by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for both side impacts, at 31 miles per hour, and frontal offset barrier impacts, at 40 miles per hour. The rear crash test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck at 20 miles per hour, and is a measure of the effectiveness of the head restraint.

The Subaru Impreza has been redesigned for 2008. Now available in two new body styles – four-door sedan and five-door – Impreza provides not only increased safety, but increased comfort and utility. The Impreza’s 2.5-liter normally aspirated Boxer engine has been modified for 2008 to improve performance, drivability, and economy. The engine delivers 170 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 170 lb-ft. of torque @ 4,400 rpm, among the highest ratings in the segment.

Active Safety
Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive forms the core of the Subaru Active Driving/Active Safety concept. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive gives a Subaru a significant traction advantage over two-wheel drive cars (front- and/or rear-wheel drive) on all road surfaces. On all Impreza models, the standard 4-channel / 4-sensor Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) incorporates Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). This system enhances braking performance and stability by actively optimizing braking force between the front and rear wheels according to how the vehicle is loaded with passengers and cargo.

The 2008 Subaru Impreza also offers available Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). VDC electronic stability control utilizes sensors which constantly monitor wheel speed, steering angle, brake pressure, vehicle yaw rate and lateral g-forces. If VDC detects a difference between the driver's intended path and the one the vehicle is actually taking, VDC applies braking power and/or reduces engine torque to help correct vehicle path.

Passive Safety
The compact Subaru Boxer engine helps enhance safety, because it allows more crush room in front and on the sides. Subaru vehicles are designed to allow the entire powertrain to slide under the car along the floor tunnel in a severe collision, helping to prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment. All Subaru models are built around a Ring Frame Reinforced body structure design that incorporates front and rear crumple-zone construction to absorb the energy of an impact and help protect the reinforced passenger compartment. Essentially, the Ring Frame Reinforced structure forms a series of “rings” around the passenger compartment, providing excellent protection in a variety of collision types. This structure increases cabin rigidity and can absorb impact energy from any direction.

Other Impreza safety features include 3-point seatbelts for all five seating positions, with electrically triggered pre-tensioners and force limiters in front. Active front seat head restraints in the Impreza are designed to help reduce whiplash injury in a rear collision. All 2008 Impreza models have standard dual-stage deployment, Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag system and front seat head/chest side-impact air bags. The international jury presiding over the Car of the Year award, made up of 58 specialist journalists from 22 European countries, has elected the Fiat 500 Car of the Year 2008 with 385 votes, ahead of the Mazda 2 (325 votes) and the Ford Mondeo (202).

In addition to winning the Car of the Year 2008 award outright, the super-compact Fiat distinguished itself by obtaining votes from most members of the jury: 57 out of 58 included it in their short-list, and 33 made it top in their personal rankings.

2007 Fiat 500

This is the second time – the first was the Fiat Panda in 2004 – that an A-segment model has won the most prestigious award in the world car industry. This extraordinary record brings total Fiat Group Automobiles wins to twelve: the Fiat 124 (1967), Fiat 128 (1970), Fiat 127 (1972), Lancia Delta (1980), Fiat Uno (1984), Fiat Tipo (1989), Fiat Punto (1995), Fiat Bravo/Brava (1996), Alfa 156 (1998), Alfa 147 (2001), Fiat Panda (2004) and the Fiat 500 (2008).

Launched on 4 July this year, the new Fiat 500 immediately aroused huge interest and very favourable comments made by more than 7,000 people from 63 countries (more than 1,000 journalists were accredited) who homed in on Turin for its début: institutional authorities, financial analysts, businessmen and celebrities from the worlds of entertainment, fashion and sport.

Critical acclaim was immediately confirmed by intense customer interest. More than 105,000 orders were taken in just four months in only two countries (Italy and France), while interest continues to grow in the rest of Europe, (for example: 6,300 orders have already been placed in Germany where the car went on sale just a few weeks ago). In Octobre, in Europe, the Fiat 500 stands second in the A-segment with a share of 14.1% (behind the Fiat Panda with a 21.2% share).

The Fiat 500 is the manifesto of ‘new Fiat’, a model that is in all respects the physical demonstration of the company’s new approach, the renewed strategies of the brand, a different way of interpreting the car. That is why the Fiat 500 has set new benchmarks in its segment. For example, this is the first time that a car barely 3.55 metres long has been awarded a 5 star crash safety rating by Euro NCAP, and this is the first time that a car in this segment has seven airbags fitted as standard (it is also the only super-compact to fit a knee-bag), with the advanced ESP available on all models (standard on the 1.4 16v 100 bhp).

In addition, this is the first time that a model has been launched with the entire range of power units (1.2 69 bhp, 1.3 MultiJet 75 bhp with DPF and 1.4 16v 100 bhp), built to respect emissions limits set by Euro 5, and all this more than two years in advance of the legislative deadline. In addition, 100 original accessories have been designed for the Fiat 500 – among which the most surprising are an electric aroma diffuser and colour-coded key fobs – along with the most advanced infotelematic systems: for example a multifunctional portable navigator from the Blue&MeTM platform.

The Car of the Year award started in 1964. To enter, new cars must go on sale in at least five different European markets in the course of the year. Judgments are expressed on the following parameters: design, comfort, safety, economic operation, driveability, performance, practicality, respect for the environment, price and value for money. A first selection is made from all the new models marketed in the course of the year (this year 33 cars were involved) and seven are shortlisted. Each member of the jury has 25 points to distribute among the seven cars, with a maximum of 10 points going to their first choice.

The award ceremony for Car of the Year 2008, organised by the German magazine Stern, will take place in Berlin on 28 January 2008.

Ford is revealing more about its vision for a new global small car family at Auto Guangzhou. Ford today revealed the second Verve Concept – a four-door notchback.

The dynamic Ford Verve Concept four-door notchback is a star of the fifth annual Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition.

The fact that Ford staged the global reveal of the four-door Verve Concept at Guangzhou signals the importance of Asia in Ford’s global plans.

Sporty and coupe-like, the Verve Concept notchback provides a very clear vision about Ford’s future small car design direction. The three-door hatchback Verve Concept was a star of the recent Frankfurt Motor Show in Europe, and it too is also under the spotlights at Guangzhou.

Ford will unveil the third and last Verve Concept in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

“With this new four-door Verve Concept, the picture of Ford's big plans for the small-car segment is becoming clearer,” said Phil Spender, Chief Operation Officer of Ford Motor (China) Ltd. “Our future small car is being developed as a global car. It will be designed in Europe, engineered in Germany and manufactured globally. These two Verve Concepts demonstrate how confident Ford is in its direction and its appeal to consumers here in China.”

Ford’s European design team created the Verve Concepts, which successfully apply Ford's kinetic design philosophy for the first time to a small car. The two Verve Concepts clearly display a European flair and premium touches not expected in this segment.

Once all have been revealed, the trilogy of Verve concept cars will provide an advanced indication of Ford’s design vision well in advance of the production models. This approach is similar to the way in which the iosis Concept preceded the new Ford Mondeo.

European Design

Side by side in Guangzhou, the two Verve Concepts bring the latest wave of Ford's kinetic design to the heart of Asia. Their colours are inspired by the world of fashion; the regal frosted grape of the new Verve Concept four-door notchback complements the bold magenta of the Frankfurt three-door hatchback like a well-coordinated ensemble.

“First it was the hatchback and now a very exciting and dynamic notchback,” said the father of kinetic design, Martin Smith, Ford’s Executive Director of European Design. “Looking at these concepts together, you can just imagine how exciting the successor to the Ford Fiesta will be when it hits the market.”

Public Response in Guangzhou

Ford designers, buoyed by the enthusiastic reaction in Europe to the first Verve Concept, will be carefully studying reactions to the new notchback by Chinese consumers.

Ford European design chief Smith said, “These Verve Concepts are a dynamic first public expression directionally of some of the thinking that will be contributing to the design DNA of our next-generation products. At this stage, we have had the freedom to be radically innovative, but I’m confident about the realistic possibilities for kinetic design to embrace this segment of vehicles.”

The latest Verve Concept builds on the very distinctive look of its hatchback sibling. These two concept vehicles share strong front-end graphics that, with the advent of the new Mondeo, are now becoming recognised as the bold, new face of Ford.

The notchback body form of the new concept family is linked with the hatchback through the use of form language composed of dynamic lines and full surfaces – the signature of kinetic design.

The new notchback execution brings new hints about Ford’s kinetic design approach to sedan variants of its future small car family.

Smith’s exterior design team – led by European Exterior Chief Designer Stefan Lamm – took full advantage of the notchback shape to stretch the kinetic design elements and create a very sleek and dynamically poised personality.

The notchback displays a sleek, pillarless side window profile providing a bold graphic statement, along with strongly defined wheel arches that communicate tension and muscularity. Its dramatic C-pillar shape contributes to this feeling of dynamism, while the rear body and decklid shapes coherently build on the toned and fit kinetic design look with full surfaces and bold lines.

As any top fashion model on the catwalk, Guangzhou’s new Verve Concept is dressed well. From its seductive colour to the smallest detail, Verve Concept evokes an air of premium quality not usually found in the small-car segment.

Despite the functional differences with the hatchback shape, the notchback’s rear design clearly displays the same kinetic design influences.

The rear glass of the Verve notchback is shaped to correspond with the forms of the high-mounted, two-piece tail lamps. This unique and premium execution, first seen on the new Mondeo, is now translated into a smaller car.

A dark chrome diffuser at the lower bumper is consistent with the design of the hatchback but shaped specifically for the notchback design.

Like its sibling, the notchback Verve’s face is bold and sporty, yet friendly and engaging. The front is dominated by a large, inverted trapezoidal lower grille and a large Ford oval badge centred in the compact upper grille opening.

The lower grille features a strong eggcrate graphic; its vertical and horizontal blades bonded by an array of intriguing ‘bullet’ shapes. The lower grille and badge treatment are the design team’s signature elements to communicate the Ford design DNA in future products.

The bonnet features highly sculpted dynamic forms. This form treatment combines with the more pronounced, rearward-stretching head lamp units – inspired by Mondeo – to give the face of the Verve a friendly, open and inviting personality. The prominent headlamps feature two projector beams and a light-emitting diode (LED) array.

The two Verve Concepts share a distinctive 18-inch, 12-spoke, two-piece alloy wheel design that lends more drama to the car. The wheels have a precise, jewel-like feel to their design. Both Verve Concepts’ are wearing low-profile tyres featuring a sidewall stripe that complements the exterior body colour.

“With a small car, for example a B-segment car compared to a larger car, we believe we can play up – or amplify – key elements of the kinetic design form language,” Lamm said. “It’s not just a matter of copy-and-paste from one vehicle segment to another but rather how to interpret the philosophy for each individual car. You can clearly see this when you compare the larger iosis Concept and this new project.”

Exploring the Inner Kinetic

The interior of the Verve Concept family is as dramatic as is its exterior. From boldly shaped surfaces and confident use of rich colours and enticing materials, the Verve Concept has a playful sense of sophistication and fashion. It also pioneers new technologies that someday may be a production reality.

As Ford designers explored the possibilities for a future Ford small car, the wide latitude they were given helped them focus on applying the tenets of kinetic design to the interior. The result is a Verve Concept which explores a completely new direction for small cars. The architecture of the instrument panel with sensuous curves and full shapes make a typical, upright centre stack design seem distinctly old fashioned.

“This is a quantum leap in bringing kinetic design into interior design,” said Niko Vidakovic, Chief Interior Designer, Ford of Europe. “This type of visual innovation, linking the form language of the interior so strongly with the exterior, is something we believe no other company is doing.”

Prominent, full forms characterises the upper instrument panel, created by the hands of Ford interior designer Tiago Diaz and supervisor Ernst Reim. Full surfaces and flowing contours on interior elements – especially the instrument panel and door panels – visually echo the exterior's kinetic design. These elements combine to envelop the vehicle’s occupants and to contrast with the airiness provided by the panoramic glass roof.

New Aesthetic Inspired by Mobile Phones

The Verve Concept was designed for the generation that grew up with mobile phones.

The centre stack is a principal feature of the interior. Aesthetically, it follows the contours of the instrument panel, rising to frame a large-screen Ford Convers+ system incorporated in the upper dash. The Ford Convers+ system incorporated in the Verve Concept is the latest-generation Human Machine Interface (HMI) recently introduced in the Ford Mondeo. This technology alone indicates the level of sophistication incorporated in this small-car vision.

Functionally, a key element of the centre stack design is the decoupling of the traditional elements of the entertainment system – the screen, control elements and the electronics. Separating these elements allowed designers to place controls and buttons for optimal ergonomic positioning in a design that resembles the logic of a mobile phone.

This new approach enables the Verve Concepts to introduce a completely new aesthetic – a new approach to the form and function of interacting with underlying technologies. The unique architecture also embraces other key systems including navigation and in-car phone controls.

Every button and switch was crafted with the kind of attention to detail that characterises good mobile phone designs. This system philosophy gives the centre stack a different feel than that of traditional automotive switchgear.

"A new generation of buyers raised with mobile electronic devices would feel right at home in this new automotive interior, one that exceeds the standards typical in the small-car segment," said Vidakovic.

Verve Concept’s heating/ventilation controls – highlighted in a lozenge shape at the midpoint of the centre stack – feature large twist dials.

The centre stack structure flows into a centre console to provide storage areas, including a tray for a mobile phone or MP3 player as well as a large area near the handbrake for a purse or shoulder bag.

“The centre stack is like the art gallery of the car,” Vidakovic said. “The combination of the sculpture of the upper instrument panel, the rich interior colours and materials and the jewellery-like brightwork is very distinctive.”

The primary gauges – speedometer and rev counter – are uniquely framed by binocular-shaped, short tunnels of brightwork which complement the centre stack. In effect, they contrast beautifully with the rich interior colours.

Verve Concept’s steering wheel – its crash pad, sculpted of soft-feel material and framed in brightwork – provides a touch-and-see centrepiece for the Ford oval badge. The left and right spokes of the three-spoke design incorporate the toggle controls for the HMI system.

Rich, Harmonious Colours

Verve Concept conveys a cool, technical interior feel. The interior colours and materials combining to represent a vision for the future interpretation of Ford’s Titanium interior, according to Ruth Pauli, Chief Designer, Colours and Trims, Ford of Europe.

“Colours and materials play an important role in emotionalising our products,” Pauli said. “With the Verve Concept notchback revealed at Guangzhou, we are striving for a very precise expression of a certain style. Tones of grey and silver express elegance and a technical feel that contrasts with the more expressive colours of the Frankfurt concept.”

Interior materials used by Pauli and colour and trim specialist Ulrike Dahm include:

* The upper instrument panel finished in Fairland dark silver matte leather
* Verve Concept’s distinctive centre console is finished in an Optimum Aluminum grey
* Syracuse dark anthracite grey leather along the lower section of the instrument panel completes the portfolio of tones
* A strip of mood illumination has been incorporated above the glove box to provide an interesting visual accent. (Designers envision the possibility that the colour and intensity of this lighting could be customer-chosen should this feature be incorporated in a future production model)

Small elements of the interior – even control stalks on the steering column – reflect an attention to detail from the team inspired by luxury goods such as cosmetics. Such small packaging requires the precise execution of every detail and the right expression, tonal quality and saturation of colours.

“Together, these elements create a strong statement of consistency, harmony and quality that makes the Verve Concept such a cohesive design statement,” Pauli said. “It is this cohesiveness that will make this concept appeal to a modern, fashion-aware audience.”

BANGKOK, Thailand – November 19, 2007 – Ford Thailand today announced a sweeping new pricing policy for its entire Ford Focus petrol lineup, reflecting the Thai Government's new excise tax policy for E20 capable vehicles, which officially takes effect on January 1.

Ford Thailand first launched the E20 capable Ford Focus in 2005 as part of Ford's global leadership and commitment to sustainability and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

“As the first automaker to introduce E20 capable vehicles in Thailand, Ford is committed to supporting Government alternative fuel policies,” said Saroj Kiatfuengfoo, senior vice president of Ford Thailand. “Starting today, new pricing for our Ford Focus E20 models is available through our nationwide network of authorized Ford dealerships."

Globally, Ford Motor Company has pledged to make half of its vehicles capable of running on alternative fuels by 2012, provided the necessary fuel and infrastructure are in place. Ford believes the Thai Government's new E20 policy is an important step forward in driving momentum for the implementation and increased usage of alternative fuels in the Thailand.

The fittings package for these vehicles has been exclusively composed for the United series and ideally reflects what customers want. Depending on the model, highlights in the package include air-conditioning, a multi-functional steering wheel, a parking pilot and fog lights, as well as cruise control and an automatic driving-light system with the "coming home and leaving home" function. Saturn Donates 2008 Vue Green Line Hybrid to The Nature Conservancy

The North Carolina Chapter of The Nature Conservancy accepted a brand-new, 2008 Saturn Vue Green Line hybrid crossover SUV today at the Charlotte International Auto Show. Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak handed the keys to Mike Horak, associate director of TNC’s North Carolina Chapter, on behalf of Saturn and General Motors.

The Vue Green Line hybrid, which boasts the highest highway fuel economy (32 mpg) of any SUV in the industry, will be used by Conservancy staff to travel to and from various projects throughout the state. It is the third vehicle GM has donated to the North Carolina Chapter of the Conservancy; and the 184th vehicle overall.

“Saturn is pleased to live its values by providing this Vue Green Line to the North Carolina Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and, in the process, raise the community’s awareness of our commitment to the environment,” said Lajdziak. “This is another example of GM’s ongoing global partnership with the Conservancy – a partnership that successfully demonstrates how a healthy economy and a healthy environment can go hand-in-hand.”

Since 1977, The Nature Conservancy’s North Carolina Chapter has sought to preserve the state’s natural diversity and has protected nearly 700,000 acres, from the Alligator National Wildlife Refuge to Grandfather Mountain. In North Carolina, it currently owns and manages more than 60 preserves encompassing more than 117,000 acres. Conservancy scientists and land stewards will use the donated Saturn Vue Green Line for land protection activities across the state.

“Given The Nature Conservancy’s mission to protect critical natural areas, it is important that we ‘walk the talk’ when it comes to the vehicles we drive. When we do need vehicles for our work, it only makes sense that we drive fuel-efficient models. A compact, five-door crossover vehicle with European-inspired design and sporty ride and handling, the 2008 Saturn Vue is the latest Saturn model to showcase the brand’s new design character and intensified focus on driving characteristics. The Nature Conservancy and General Motors

In 1994, The Nature Conservancy and General Motors began a relationship that was unprecedented for both organizations because of its size and scope. General Motors was drawn to the Conservancy because its collaborative approach promotes a healthy economy and a healthy environment. It also generates innovative initiatives within local communities that preserve our landscapes, help local economies and save precious places around the world.

During the past 13 years GM has donated more than $10.3 million in cash and 184 vehicles to aid the often-rugged conservation work of The Nature Conservancy. GM’s funding supports many different projects within the Conservancy and GM’s donated vehicles are serving on preserves in all 50 states and in 20 other countries.

One of the world's foremost automotive safety authorities, The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the BMW X3 and X5 the top rating in each of its series of crash tests, earning both vehicles the Institute's coveted TOP SAFETY PICK Award.
The awards confirm that BMW Sport Activity vehicles provide the best levels of occupant safety thanks to advanced body engineering and safety systems.

BMW has a history of building safe Sport Activity Vehicles.

During testing in 2000, the first generation BMW X5 earned a TOP SAFETY PICK, and was judged not only the best in the burgeoning SUV class, but also the best ever vehicle tested by the IIHS at that point. Since that time BMW has continued to garner praise from the IIHS for its vehicles.

The Institute rates vehicles "Good," "Acceptable," "Marginal" or "Poor" based on performance in high-speed Frontal Offset and Side Impact crash tests as well as an evaluation of the vehicle's Rear Crash Protection/Head Restraints, which protect against neck injuries in rear impact crashes.

In order for a vehicle to become a TOP SAFETY PICK, it must earn "Good" ratings in all three Institute tests. Additionally, as of 2007, winning vehicles must also offer Electronic Stability Control (or as BMW calls it Dynamic Stability Control) - a feature that both the BMW X3 and X5 offer with enhancements over previous models.

Mazda Motor Corporation today revealed the all-new Mazda2 (known as Mazda Demio in Japan) sedan at the 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show.

This version of Mazda’s latest model has a dynamic and elegant form that was designed to capture new customers in the rapidly growing Chinese B-car segment.

The all-new Mazda2 sedan is produced by Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd. at its Nanjing plant, and will go on sale in the first half of 2008 through the Changan Mazda Motor Sales Company’s network.

Noriaki Yamada, President and COO of Mazda Motor (China) Co., Ltd. said, “By introducing the four-door sedan and five-door hatchback to the B-car segment in China, we will have completed our product launches in the B, C and CD segments, which represent the three major Chinese vehicle classes. The new models will greatly strengthen Mazda’s product lineup in China.”

Mazda’s Senior Managing Executive Officer, Kiyoshi Ozaki, spoke about Mazda’s global growth and China business at the press conference. “In fiscal year 2007, we expect to achieve our seventh consecutive year of profit growth and fourth straight year of record profit. At the 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show, Mazda will promote the Zoom-Zoom brand promise by displaying twelve vehicles from five model lines, which represent Mazda’s core products that are scheduled for launch.

The display will include the Mazda5 and Mazda3 5-door hatchback, which are due to be introduced through FMSC. The Mazda5 is a stylish global minivan that will go on sale in China from December 2007. The Mazda3 5-door hatchback is one of Mazda’s core models and supports global sales mainly in Europe, Japan and Asia. It is due to commence sales in China during the first half of 2008.

The all-new Mazda2 five-door hatchback and sedan models that will be launched through the new CMSC channel will also be showcased. Mitsubishi i City car: a run-away sales success

Mitsubishi’s new i City Car has been a run-away success since it was launched in the UK in July 2007.

The first batch of 300 units sold out within two and a half weeks of going on sale, and over 50% of the second batch have been sold before the vehicles even hit UK soil. Over 1,500 units are already planned for sale in 2008, with more available if sales continue to be strong.

Mitsubishi has conducted extensive research of i’s customers, discovering that 83% of buyers were not previously Mitsubishi owners. They also surveyed the key factors influencing the purchase decision. The vehicle’s compact size was the most important factor, with price and high specification coming second. The car’s environmental credentials and styling were also rated in the top 5 reasons for the vehicle’s sales success.

Town and city dwellers accounted for 76% of buyers, predominantly in the South East of England where the threat of additional tax and Congestion Charges loom on the horizon.

Lance Bradley, Mitsubishi’s Sales and Marketing Director, remarked that “we have proven that Mitsubishi can successfully operate in multiple industry segments. 2008 Mercury Mariner Premier 4WD Review

A writer might associate the word "ancient" with "mariner" in deference to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's famous poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner". That's a correct association in literature, but incorrect in connection with cars or small SUVs, where "Mariner" brings to mind Mercury. The Mercury Mariner is not exactly ancient, having been introduced in 2005. And besides, it gets a suite of major updates for 2008.

Most apparently, both the exterior and interior have been restyled. "Freshened styling" is a typical mid-product life cycle occurrence in the automotive industry, but here there is a bit more than mere "freshening". More external sheetmetal has been changed than not, and inside, the 2008 Mariner is meant to foretell the look of future Mercurys. As ever, that interior has more space than might be imagined looking at the compact exterior, and some trick new standard and optional storage schemes.

PERFORMANCE:
If the exterior and interior are new, the engine compartment is familiar. The Mariner's V6 is the venerable 3.0 liter twin cam, 24-valve alloy Duratec. With 200 horsepower (at 6000 rpm) and 193 lb-ft of torque (at 4850), it has plenty of power for everyday use, and revisions over the years have improved refinement levels. The four-speed automatic transmission is well-suited to the Mariner's niche in life. Ditto for the "Intelligent 4WD" four-wheel drive system. It operates in front-wheel drive mode most of the time, and uses a computer-controlled center clutch to engage the rear wheels as needed. Input from sensors at each wheel and the accelerator pedal allows the computer to determine the necessary torque split, transparently to the driver.

2008 Tesla Roadster

After remaining dormant for several years, electric cars are surging back into the news. First, there was the summer debut of the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? followed soon after by the announcement in Los Angeles of the Tesla roadster, a $100,000 electric sports car built by a Silicon Valley entrepreneur.

The battery-powered Tesla is based on a modified Lotus Elise chassis. Its maker, Tesla Motors, of San Carlos, California, claims it’ll zap 60 mph in four seconds, juice it to 130 mph, and spin the meter for up to 250 miles between charges (the GM EV1 did up to 150 miles). And, unlike the Lotus, the Tesla Signature One Hundred Collector’s Edition (the first 100 cars, in other words) will have a cup holder.

Changes to the Elise structure accommodate the Tesla’s higher curb weight — it’s 2500 pounds, says the company, about 500 more than an Elise — and allow a larger cockpit and a comfort level above that of a kielbasa casing. Lotus Engineering performed much of the rework, and the Tesla will be assembled on the Elise line in Hethel, England.

The proliferation of hand-held electronics and the subsequent development of small, stout lithium-ion batteries to power them for days without charge are what make the Tesla possible, says Eberhard. Think of the pack as 6831 batteries measuring 1.0 by 2.6 inches, about the same size as a C battery. With a 220-volt, 70-amp charger made by Tesla that is hard-wired into your garage, the roadster will go from flat to flat-out in 3.5 hours. The car will be offered with a cord and a conventional 120-volt wall plug, should you be away from home, but charging time stretches to 33 hours. The pack will be warranted for five years or 100,000 miles.

The Tesla has a three-phase, 248-hp motor with a 13,500-rpm redline. A solenoid-operated two-speed manual transmission performs gear reduction and torque multiplication. A/C, anti-lock brakes, and airbags are part of the standard kit.

What's New for 2008
After being fully redesigned last year, the Toyota Tundra enters 2008 with only minor changes, such as the expansion of the base "Tundra Grade" trim to all body styles and additional standard features for the SR5 and Limited trim levels.

Introduction
When we first heard about the completely redesigned, second-generation Toyota Tundra -- the bigger, tougher successor that was going to give the big T something serious for the full-size pickup segment -- we could picture the scene. The old Wild West gunfight-about-to-happen music plays as the Tundra rolls to a stop somewhere in America's heartland. The dust settles, a tumbleweed rolls by. But instead of Gary Cooper or Clint Eastwood, a Ford F-150 appears opposite the Toyota and growls: "You're not from around here, are you?"

Driving Impressions
Equipped with the 5.7-liter V8, the 2008 Toyota Tundra is incredibly powerful and the engine's delivery is impressively smooth. Shifts from the six-speed automatic transmission are prompt, and the console shifter's precise action allows drivers to easily use the manual mode while tackling steep highway grades or rugged off-road situations.

Four-door Fiesta heads east

Ford has revealed the second in its trilogy of Verve concepts, and this time it's a four-door that points to the design of the next generation Fiesta saloon.

We saw the handsome little three-door back in Frankfurt, but this bigger variant has been unveiled at the Guangzhou motor show in China.

That's because the saloon Fiesta will likely be an Asia-only model - we in Europe will instead get the three- and five-door hatches. It's an indication of just how seriously the big manufacturers are taking the emerging markets in the Far East.

Ford is calling the four-door Verve a 'notchback', a term we'd more commonly associated with classic three-box saloons, whereas this is a far more flowing, curvaceous design. From the B-pillar forward it's identical to the three-door Verve, but adds a Mondeo-style rear end with high-mounted two-piece taillights.

The frameless doors won't make it to production - and we can't imagine those 20-inch 12-spokes coming as standard - but Ford says the four-door gives 'an advanced indication' of its design philosophy.

The final instalment in the Verve trilogy - likely a taller, mini-SUV concept - will be revealed at the Detroit show in January.

Chevrolet's Got the Beat with Vehicle Production Slated Based on Global Popularity

A vehicle based on the Chevrolet Beat concept, which swept through auto shows around the globe and the Internet earlier this year, will go into global production, Chevrolet announced today at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show.

An online poll that attracted more than 1.8 million voters helped influence the decision to take the concept to production. The distinctly styled A-class car will be initially targeted to markets outside of U.S. and Canada, starting in mid-2009.

“The people have spoken. The vote count tripled all previous GM online consumer surveys, telling us the Beat resonated with customers all around the world,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “Chevrolet was overwhelmed by the positive reaction to each of the ‘triplets,’ but the Beat was the clear winner.”

The production model will carry the spirit of the expressive Chevy Beat concept, offering compact, city-friendly dimensions and a small-displacement engine that delivers excellent fuel economy. It adds further depth and breadth to Chevrolet’s global lineup, which is sold in more than 90 countries, giving the brand a leadership position in the segment – the fastest-growing automotive segment in many regions around the world.

“Fuel solutions and great-looking cars are at the core of Chevrolet’s values, and this new production model aligns perfectly with those tenents,” said Peper. “It will be truly global, built around the world for a variety of diverse markets.”

The Beat and the other concepts highlighted in the online survey were developed primarily at GM’s Design Studio in Bupyeong, South Korea , with input from GM’s global network of designers and GM’s Korean partner, GM Daewoo. As South Korea is a primary market for this exciting new car, production will begin there.

Beat beginnings

Conceived to evoke the mood of a speedy micro import tuner, the Beat concept debuted at the 2007 New York Auto Show, along with two other concepts, Groove and Trax. All were designed to appeal to young car buyers in urban markets, infusing the energy, diversity and excitement of urban life into cars that deliver good-looking fun, fuel economy and value.

The Beat concept was designed and built leveraging GM’s Global Product Development process, created from best practices around the world that integrate design, engineering, powertrain and manufacturing organizations to ensure each vehicle program meets its quality, timing and business targets, yet is responsive to the needs in regional markets.

As part of its global product development process, GM is growing the skills and capabilities of its design and engineering centers around the world, using key tools and technologies, such as a global virtual design and engineering network, that allow engineers and designers to collaborate with each other worldwide.

The production car based on the Beat concept incorporates these resources, bringing to market quickly a right-sized car, with a right-sized ecological footprint at the right time.

General Motors announced today that Chevrolet will lead the corporation’s effort to reinvent the industry with a global portfolio of cars and trucks ranging from gas-friendly to gas-free.

The press event featured the world premiere of the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2-Mode Hybrid full-size pickup and the first auto show reveal of the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid sedan, as well as the North American debut of the 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 subcompact hatchback. GM also announced a partnership with the Walt Disney Company in which 10 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicles will be deployed as shuttles on Disney properties in California.

“We’ve said time and time again that we intend to be part of the solution to society’s energy issues for reasons that involve energy efficiency, energy security and environmental responsibility,” said GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz in making today’s announcement. “Because there is no single solution for every consumer in every part of the world, we believe we can make the biggest impact through the broad portfolio of Chevrolet, our largest brand and a global force in the industry.”

Just as Chevrolet’s portfolio includes cars and trucks designed for every purpose and budget, Chevrolet’s Fuel Solutions (www.chevrolet.com/fuelsolutions) comprises a variety of technologies including conventional high-mpg gas-powered vehicles; biofuels such as E85 ethanol; advanced gas-electric hybrids; fuel cells; and extended-range electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Volt, powered by GM’s E-Flex System.

“Fuel economy is a vital part of the DNA of Chevrolet and we have an excellent story to tell today and a solid vision for the future,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “Customers can go to a Chevrolet dealership today and find a range of Fuel Solutions vehicles, and they’ll be able to buy many others in the near future.

For global markets, GM announced it will build the Chevrolet Beat mini-car concept first shown at the New York Auto Show. Beat was the top finisher among 1.8 million people worldwide who cast their votes online, and Lutz hinted that GM also might build the runner-up concept, the Chevrolet Groove.

Efficiency throughout GM’s portfolio

Fuel economy will not be the exclusive domain of Chevrolet however. The GM exhibit in L.A. also includes the new 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, just introduced at the Miami Auto Show; and the first public showing of the all-new, fuel-efficient 2009 Pontiac Vibe compact crossover.

The Escalade Hybrid is the world’s first fuel-saving hybrid applied to a large luxury SUV. Powered by GM’s innovative, patented 2-Mode Hybrid system, the 2WD model of the Escalade Hybrid will deliver a significant improvement in fuel economy in city driving over its gasoline-only sibling – all while delivering the same distinctive style, segment-leading features and full-size capability that have made the Escalade a cultural symbol from hip-hop clubs to country clubs, from Los Angeles to Dubai to Shanghai.

Also in L.A. fresh from its Miami debut is the 2008 Cadillac Escalade Platinum, a special edition that takes Cadillac’s dramatic design, elegance and technology to its fullest expression. Offered on Escalade and the extended-length Escalade ESV, the Platinum edition includes a blend of technical innovations and aesthetic enhancements. Escalade Platinum will be the world’s first SUV to be equipped with Cadillac’s advanced Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) technology, the industry’s fastest-reacting suspension system.

The 2009 Pontiac Vibe is a modern re-mix of a classic hit, infusing the functionality of a compact crossover with a bolder attitude of muscular styling, increased performance and tight handling. With the base model’s 1.8L engine and the standard manual transmission, fuel economy is estimated at 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway; with the automatic, fuel economy is estimated at 25 in the city and 31 on the highway.

GM goes for three wins at Design Challenge

GM’s West Coast Advanced Design Studio hopes for a three-peat at this year’s Design Los Angeles Design Challenge with its futuristic insect/robot-inspired GM-OnStar ANT. The theme for this fourth annual competition, a crowd favorite because it kicks all conventional design thinking to the curb, is Robocar 2057.

Much like the self-regulating traffic system found in nature’s most determined commuter, the ant, OnStar-enabled vehicle-to-vehicle communication and embedded intelligence allow GM’s ANT to communicate with other vehicles to identify traffic jams miles away, therefore improving traffic flow on the freeways of 2057. Quantum computing power also allows each ANT to virtually re-create a highly personalized space for any occasion or personal need.

Omni-directional propulsion, provided by three independent “nanorb” wheel systems, operate as independent robots and can arrange themselves in different configurations, turning virtually anything into a mobile device. Layered, environmentally friendly, single-walled, carbon-polymer nanocomposites form the flat surface panels, which incorporate the carbon nanotube battery.

All body panels are connected with electro-active polymer actuators (like artificial muscles), allowing the easy and silent reconfiguration of body panels, depending on their optimal street use.

The GM team won the 2007 Design Challenge with the Hummer O2, which transformed the future of driving into an environmental experience; and in 2006 with the GMC Pad, a mobile urban loft featuring a diesel-electric hybrid system and infotainment-laden surroundings.

Honda Introduces Experimental Home Energy Station IV at Los Angeles Auto Show

Appliance-like device may help solve problem of hydrogen supply for fuel cell vehicles

Honda today announced that it has begun using the Home Energy Station IV at its Honda R&D Americas, Inc. facility in Torrance, California. This fourth-generation experimental unit is designed to provide fuel for a hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle, as well as heat and electricity for a home. The new system is more compact and efficient, with a lower operating cost than previous models. The announcement coincides with the world debut of the all-new Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Honda's Home Energy Station technology is designed to facilitate the broader adoption of zero-emissions fuel cell vehicles, like the Honda FCX Clarity, by developing a home refueling solution that makes efficient use of a home's existing natural gas supply for production of hydrogen, while providing heat and electricity to an average-size home.

The Home Energy Station IV can reduce both cost and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for the consumer. Compared to the average U.S. consumer's home with grid-supplied electricity and a gasoline-powered car, a home using Home Energy Station IV to help produce heat and electricity and also to refuel an FCX Clarity can reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 30 percent and energy costs by an estimated 50 percent.

"Honda is striving to address the need for a refueling infrastructure for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles," said Ben Knight, vice president of Honda R&D Americas. "The Home Energy Station represents one promising solution to this issue, while offering the added benefit of heating and powering the home more efficiently."

Working with technology partner, Plug Power, Inc., Honda began operation of a Home Energy Station in October, 2003. Home Energy Station IV represents the latest evolution of the technology with a 70 percent reduction in size compared to the first unit, making it even more suitable for household installation. By combining gas purification and power generation components, overall size reduction and efficiency gains are achieved, while enabling it to switch from hydrogen refining to power generation when needed.
